2011 Winter Program: Tradition and Innovation
Tuesday, December 27 - Saturday, December 31, 2011
Both tradition and innovation play important roles in the world of the Sages. On the one hand, we are told minhag avoteinu be-yadeinu, the tradition of our forefathers is in our hands, and that we must hold tight to precedent. On the other hand, halakhic and aggadic literature abound with examples of creative and novel enactments and interpretations. When and how did the Sages choose to apply each of these seemingly opposing principles? We will examine these and other related questions through the study of these debates at different points in history.
Tuition: $150
